I'm going to import the doc into Pages for now and see if it treats me more kindly! I did this, and it didn't work for me, but what did work, was accepting all changes in the review tab. Apparently clicking the little check mark isn't enough, one must consciously Dec 1, PM. So by doing the above, at least the markup is not visible even if the menu item continues to re-check itself.
