This book really felt like the reference text to an introduction to ecology class in college, likely compiled from a series of lectures and course slides from the author.

Basic concepts in population ecology, succession, invasive species, trophic cascades, nutrient cycles and energy flows to name several areas, were described in very short chapters each, with case studies and diagrams. I suppose for those with no prior knowledge of ecology it would be some what interesting, but definitely not fo This book really felt like the reference text to an introduction to ecology class in college, likely compiled from a series of lectures and course slides from the author.

I suppose for those with no prior knowledge of ecology it would be some what interesting, but definitely not for most nature lovers who should already be familiar with the subject. In this respect, if the book had been aimed at the general reading public a more catchy title would have worked better than the current one.

Krebs is another academic leech who would like to get invited to any popular show like some of his paper pushers. It provides new understanding of these vital systems as they are now, and how they may change in the future. Ecology enriches our world and is crucial for human wellbeing and prosperity. It provides new knowledge of the interdependence between people and nature that is vital for food production, maintaining clean air and water, and sustaining biodiversity in a changing climate.

Ecology provides the essential basis for nature conservation. Maintaining a mosaic of habitats ensures the survival of a rich variety of species.

For instance, heathland is a valued landscape that is fast disappearing throughout much of Western Europe, but studies have helped identify how to preserve its ecological characteristic. Governments and citizens around the world are increasingly aware of the consequences of atmospheric pollution and climate change. In large-scale experiments, plants and animals are exposed to carefully controlled atmospheres and different ecological conditions.

There is much to be concerned about our planet, but ecology is also a science of optimism and hope. We hope that this collection of engaging, fascinating and important research — from studies at single sites, to studies across the globe — will inspire and fascinate you, demonstrating why ecology matters for all its different reasons.
