One of the video resolution controls is located at the bottom of your Composition Window and the other is in your Preview Panel. Each is different though many people believe them to be the same thing.
The Video Resolution drop down under your Composition Window controls Pause Resolution, which is the resolution when you are not previewing your animation. The resolution control in your Preview Panel is Play Resolution and can effectively lower the video resolution any time you play or preview your animation.
I would consider this option as a last resort if After Effects is consistently slow. Adobe CC takes advantage of the newer systems on the market while trying to maintain some backwards compatibility. If you wish to have After Effects run well on an older computer and operating system, install an older version of After Effects. Slower rotating drives like rpm drives have been used by manufacturers for laptops because they produce less heat.
It is not recommended to use After Effects with a rpm drive. Use only or higher. Cache can be a way of storing your previously rendered previews for faster playback. This value changes the quality of preview only during pause. As we see, the quality of the preview has deteriorated, but the download speed has increased.
To do this go to the Preview menu and select the needed value of the frames that will be skipped. Standardly, it is suggested to skip 1, 2 or 5, but you can put your own value. The smoothness of the video preview will change but loading process will become faster. The thing to do regularly is clearing the cache. And click Empty Disk Cache. The cache was cleared. Also here you can change the maximum size used on disk for cache.
Change this as you want, depending on the power of your computer. To do this you need to reduce the RAM used by other programs, for example, to 2. This should dramatically speed up your originally slow preview in After Effects. A proxy is basically a lower resolution version of a still image or a still frame of a video that can be used in place of the full resolution original. While you may not be able to see exactly what the final outcome of your composition will look like when using proxies, you will be able to swiftly animate elements and preview your composition much easier than you would when using the original footage.
To set up a proxy for video footage, open the video in Photoshop. You can then save one of the frames of the video as an image. If you wish, you could also reduce the resolution of this frame by heading to Image, Canvas Size… and inputting a new resolution. This happens to the best of us. When a project takes a turn of direction or assets get swapped about, the project window can get jam-packed with unused assets and compositions.
Luckily, After Effects has a handy command that gets rid of any unused content. This is also a great way for you to keep track of any storyboarding you may be doing for your project — just match the file names to the scenes in your storyboard. From here, you can keep only the comps, assets and layers you need in each. With these quick, and not-so-quick fixes in place, your After Effects project should preview at a faster speed than before.
