I played around with it for 4 years or so from until Then Amazon had a trade-in promotion where they'd basically give me back everything I paid for it and then some.
So I got rid of it. I've heard of people sending theirs into Sony themselves after getting the YLOD, only to see it happen again within a year. User Info: WizardofHoth. How long a playstation 3 lasts or any console or handheld depends on you whether you take good care of it for years etc.
It still works great since I still play games with it and use it for netflix. I wonder what causes it then? You can use this update to upgrade your system software to version 4. Thanks but that's for updating the firmware not patching games. It depends whats in the update. But usually minutes. But I guess if you just got a PS3 , it depends what firmware was on there when you got it.
If it is a really early version - it has to update a lot of stuff, so it would take longer. Can you still jailbreak ps3?

As Rottenfox said, it only masks the real problem and should be considered a temporary fix.
My launch 60Gb died 2 weeks after the warranty expired. Sony repaired it for free, and has been going strong for over 2 years now. Unsure what to do at the minute, doesn't look like they're going for much as scrap on eBay, and I have no idea about local places that might be able to fix it. Any ideas? Sorry to hijack the thread btw. Way to go tempting fate looking at this thread earlier Gone again today, making it 3 months fairly heavy use.
Good news the repair is covered by a 3 month warranty Quick chat with the Console Wizard and i'm still covered! My 60GB fat launch console died just 3 months out of its 3-year warranty in June. As others have said though I doubt if the reflow will hold as its the law of diminishing returns once its done.
Have since backed up everything so it'll be another YLOD fixes from here on. After that if it goes I'll probably go for a slim. Beats the crappy offer Sony are offering on reconditioned units.
