Coolant overflow how does it work




















I would like to get an Mishimoto over flow tank. But i want one where i can remove the old plastic one and put the new Mishimoto one in. Overflow Tank The overflow tank typically has one or sometimes two ports. The hot coolant is transferred back and forth between the tank depending on the pressure emitted from the hot coolant.

That small tab in the center is a one-way valve that allows the coolant to return to the radiator after the pressure in the system returns to a regular level.

Expansion Tank Expansion tanks are a little more complex. Pictured is the factory expansion tank from the FK8 Civic Type R, or the lesser version of the title image. Cooling systems that use expansion tanks will have the pressurized radiator cap located on the expansion tank rather than the radiator.

Why Upgrade? This is a problem I personally experienced. The seal would degrade over time and seep coolant all over the exhaust heat shielding and sometimes the exhaust itself. A constant leak like this can lead to chronic overheating and potential damage to your engine components. That plastic might look thick, but constant heating and cooling to these materials, not to mention the inevitability of staining from the colored coolant, are not kind to the tank.

I have the same problem with my PT Cruiser. Coolant burps into the overflow bottle, but then will not return to the radiator. There is still pressure on the cap 12 hrs after I turn the car off. I had the same problem. But i did the following by myself and the problem was solved.

Disconected the return water hose from the engine and drained the radiator completely. Opened the radiator cap. Removed the overflow tank cap and blow air with my mouth through the cap hose. This helped me flushed any debris that may have accumulated in the system. Removed the overflow tank and cleaned properly.

Fixed back the radiator cap,hose ,overflow tank and cap and filled the radiator completely with water. Started the car and noticed that the problem has been solved after driven the car for 2 days.

Everything is now good. No more problem. I have similar problem and all my mechanic seems not to have perfect solutions, i already change to new radiator but it continues and i was advised to Change the top gasket, please chijioke. Before you drive anywhere, make sure you top off the coolant in both the radiator and the coolant reservoir. Do you see anything leaking under the car? Evaporated coolant may leave white streaks or a sweet smell in the engine bay. If your coolant is leaking internally, you may see white smoke out of the exhaust.

I would take the vehicle to a mechanic you trust in the area to get it checked out. So it is normal not to have any fluid in the coolant overflow when the car is cold?
